While you're visiting Missoula:
A campus visit is an opportunity for individual prospective students and their families to experience life at UM and to get all of their questions answered. During a campus visit you will also have the opportunity to learn about the admissions process, residence life, and student life.
We try our best to arrange for our visitors the best campus visit experience possible by offering a variety of options in the campus visit program. Depending on your schedule and the availability of faculty and staff, we will try to accommodate your requests, but the typical campus visit includes an admissions visit, a guided walking tour of campus, and meeting with an academic department.
We offer campus visits Monday through Friday throughout the entire year, except holidays, but we encourage prospective students to visit when school is in session in order to get a better understanding of what life is like as a student at UM. If you want to meet with a representative from a specific academic department, then we strongly discourage you from visiting near finals or the first week of classes. Faculty are extremely busy and have less flexible schedules at these times of the year
Most definitely! We encourage families to be included in the college admissions process and will work diligently to accommodate individual needs.
No. Hospitality is one of the main focuses of the University community, and we consider it our pleasure to share our campus with you. Neither our daily campus visit programs nor our UM Days have any participation fees.
Yes! We encourage all students who have an interest in a specific area of study to meet with a representative in that department. When registering for your campus visit, please indicate in the appropriate space that you want to meet with a department and tell us which department or departments you would like to visit. Depending on the availability of faculty and staff, we will be able to schedule a visit with most departments throughout the year. However, please allow no less than a full two weeks notice if you plan on meeting with a department. We would also encourage you to visit the department's website so that you are prepared to ask questions. Faculty members always appreciate a well prepared student.
Yes. We offer admissions visits Monday through Friday throughout the year, except holidays. Bring your questions and we will have a dialogue about the admissions process and requirements, as well as present you with general information about The University of Montana and Missoula.
Our UM Advocates (student ambassadors) give walking tours of campus twice each day, beginning at 11:10am and 2:10pm. **NOTE: During the Summer (May 18-August 28), campus tours will be offered once daily at 1:10pm.
Generally, tours last about one hour.
The UM Advocates are a volunteer student leadership group on campus that has received extensive training on leading tours. They are a great resource for prospective students and their families since they are immersed in the college experience and can share their personal story.
Absolutely! We want to make sure that your campus visit is as comfortable and informative as possible. Campus visitors with a disability, whether permanent or temporary, who would like to request a reasonable accommodation are encouraged to note the request in the appropriate space when registering for their campus visit. Please allow no less than two weeks notice before your campus visit to ensure the availability of resources like a sign language interpreter or wheel chair for example.
Unfortunately, we do not have a room available to view during campus tours. At our UM Days (Open House), we do offer an extensive residence hall tour. To take a virtual tour or to learn more about our various residence halls, please visit the Residence Life Office website.
We do not offer any over-night visits on campus when school is in session. In the summer, depending on availability, the Residence Life Office may be able to provide housing during your campus visit. Ample notice is required. Please contact their office at 406.243.2611. We do not recommend any particular local hotel or motel for lodging during your visit, but we do have a list of several options that are within walking distance of campus. Check out our Travel and Accommodations page.
You can register for a campus visit and/or tour on-line or call our office at 800.462.8636.
In order to have an appropriate number of tour guides to accommodate the number of visitors on any given day, we greatly appreciate your cooperation in pre-registering for a campus tour at least two to three weeks before your campus visit. However, our daily 11:10am and 2:10pm tours depart from Enrollment Services - Admissions in Lommasson 101 and are open to walk-in visitors. Please arrive at least ten minutes prior to the designated tour departure times.
An email confirmation including a campus map and one-day parking permit will automatically be sent to you when you register on-line.
We would be happy to edit your campus visit for you if your plans change. We will try to accommodate any changes that need to be made depending on your request and the availability of staff and faculty. The more advanced notice you can give us, the more likely we will be able to fulfill your requests. Please contact our office by phone at 800.462.8636 to make any changes to your campus visit.
If there is inclement weather, namely rain and snow, and it is light or moderate, then the tour will be offered. If there is severe weather, we may delay or cancel the tour. Check out the weather forecast for Missoula.
We recommend that you prepare accordingly for Montana weather. During the winter months, there is a possibility for snow, in the summer it can get hot. However part of Montana's appeal is that there can be a mix of weather phenomena in both fall and spring. We do have some umbrellas available for your use, but we do recommend that you come appropriately prepared (e.g. a jacket, at least, in the spring and fall, sunglasses and sunscreen in the summer, and pants and a heavier coat in the winter).
All tours and admissions visits begin in the office of Enrollment Services - Admissions located in Lommasson 101. You will receive a confirmation email when you register for your visit. Included in the confirmation is a campus map.
With your email confirmation, you will receive a one-day parking permit. You may use this permit in any non-reserved or hourly pay parking lot on campus by displaying it clearly on your dashboard. Enrollment Services - Admissions has three spaces available for campus visitors located in the parking lot between Lommasson Center and Miller Hall. Be aware that finding a spot on campus between 9:00am and 5:00pm can be difficult.
Please allow ample time for parking and for locating the Lommasson Center.
