Indians Into Psychology (INPSYCH) is funded by the Indian Health Services, is sponsored by the Department of Psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences. It provides a wide variety of academic and social support for American Indian pre-psychology and psychology majors designed specifically to increase the number of American Indian clinical psychologists.
In 1990, the Board of Regents of the Montana University System adopted a Minority Achievement Policy. The policy required each campus to develop an action plan to accomplish the goals for diversity. In the case of The University of Montana, a year was spent developing a ten-year action plan with input from a broad cross-section of campus constituents.
Residential Enrichment Activities in Healthcare (REACH) is sponsored by the College of Health Professions and Biomedical Sciences, REACH is a six-week summer enrichment program for low-income and minority students desiring a career in pharmacy, physical therapy, medicine, or other health care field.
Training for American Indians in Environmental Biology (TRAIN) is a National Science Foundation-sponsored partnership between The University of Montana and Salish Kootenai College aimed at mentoring undergraduate American Indian students in environmental biology through research internships and preparatory class work.
Bridges to the Baccalaureate is designed to assist American Indian students attending Montana tribal colleges with an interest in biomedical sciences to make a successful transition from their tribal college to a four-year college degree program at UM.
The University of Montana's Upward Bound Program serves students attending Missoula Hellgate, Missoula Big Sky, Browning High, and Great Falls High School. The high schools have been carefully selected because of the wonderful opportunity to serve a broad range of culturally diverse students with need for academic support in order for them to reach their dream of attending college. Addressing diversity makes considerable sense considering the mobile global workforce that brings foreign employees to America and sends American employees overseas. Students must develop a sense of tolerance and cultural appreciation as an important job skill.
