International Admission Requirements

The University of Montana accepts both freshman and transfers students for the either the fall or spring semesters. By submitting your application early there will be plenty of time to request test results and academic records as well as apply for a student visa.

To provide time for evaluation and for notice of acceptance to reach the applicant in a timely manner, the application and required credentials must be received by Enrollment Services-Admissions according to the following deadlines:

Fall Semester – July 15
Spring Semester – December 15
Summer Session – April 15

Freshmen International

Students will be considered for admission on the basis of their secondary school record and their English language proficiency. Applicants must have a minimum cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of a 2.5 or C on a 4.0 scale and meet the English language proficiency score requirements to qualify for admission.

International Undergraduate Application

A completed International Undergraduate Application must be submitted either online or by mail with a paper application.

Application Fee

A non-refundable US$36 online application or US$30 paper application. The fee must be in U.S. currency. Checks and/or money orders should be made payable to University of Montana.

English Language Proficiency Requirements

Proficiency in English for study at the undergraduate level must be demonstrated by one of the following:

Those students who are citizens of countries where English is the native languages do not need to submit proof of English language proficiency unless English is not the student’s native language.

Secondary School Academic Records

Official or certified secondary school transcripts listing all courses and grades/marks are required.  Additional official certificates may be required to show completion of secondary school.

The transcript must be in the original language accompanied by an English translation.  The applicant may make the translation themselves.

The transcript must be sent directly from the secondary school to Enrollment Services-Admissions.

Photocopied, scanned, or emailed copies will not be accepted.

The University of Montana reserves the right to require further verification of all transcripts and academic records submitted by students.

Certificate of Financial Responsibility

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services require that every international student verify the availability of funds to pay for educational and living expense before an I-20 or DS-2019 can be issued.

Applicants are required to complete the Certificate of Financial Responsibility within the application.  An official bank statement is also required to accompany the application. Admission will not be considered until the Certificate of Financial Responsibility is completed and accompanied with an official bank statement.

Copy of passport

Applicants are required to submit a photocopy of their passport or other official identification.


Transfer International

Transfer students will be considered on the basis of their postsecondary education record and their English language proficiency. Applicants must have minimum cumulative transferable grade-point average (GPA) of a 2.0 or C on a 4.0 scale and met the English language proficiency score requirements to qualify for admission.

Applicants transferring from a U.S. University may fulfill the English language requirement by completing college-level English composition courses with a grade of ‘C’ or better.  Otherwise proficiency in English for study at the undergraduate level must be demonstrated by one of the following:
